Visits to the Livorno Lighthouse
Faro di Livorno
Free event
Friday, August 2, and Saturday, August 3, from 09:00 AM to 01:00 PM, by reservation only.
The Italian Navy, on the occasion of the “Effetto Venezia” 2024 edition, will open the doors of the ancient Lighthouse of Livorno, which has been illuminating the Livorno coast since the 1300s.
The Lighthouse is currently located within the Azimut Benetti Shipyard. It was built in the medieval era by the Republic of Pisa and was later rebuilt after being damaged during World War II. It is considered one of the oldest lighthouses in Italy.
Standing 52 meters above sea level, the Major Beacon of Livorno is a rotating optic lighthouse powered by electricity. The light is currently generated by a 1000 W halogen bulb, emitting 4 flashes every 20 seconds with a range of about 24 nautical miles. In the Medici era, the lighthouse operated with vegetable oil burners, later with petroleum, using reverberating mirrors to amplify the light. In 1841, the lantern was equipped with the first Fresnel lenses and an incandescent acetylene gas burner. Since 1911, the lighthouse has been managed by the Italian Navy.
The Lighthouse of Livorno will be open for visits on Friday, August 2, and Saturday, August 3, from 09:00 AM to 01:00 PM.
The visit, which is free of charge, will be possible exclusively by reservation, accessed from the entrance of the Azimut Benetti Shipyards at Via Edda Fagni n.1 (Livorno).
