Artisans of Sound. The Art of Making Matter Vibrate
Exhibition dedicated to the construction of musical instruments

Music will be the protagonist of the 39th edition of Effetto Venezia, “Music from the World – Sounds of Land and Sea” in Livorno. And this year, music will also inspire Artigianato a Effetto, the exhibition hall set up by the Livorno Foundation in collaboration with Oma (Artisan Craft Observatory) to promote the best interpreters of local artistic craftsmanship, often known in the national and international panorama as well.

In the “Sala Simonini” of the former District 2, along Scali Finocchietti, the artisans of sound who with patience, manual skill, creativity, and professionalism help promote tradition, innovation, and culture, have come together to create an alternative and unprecedented space dedicated to the construction of musical instruments.

Let the imagination run wild and the venue has transformed into a narrative that will explain how the art of producing sound has evolved and the tricks of the trade to make very different and sometimes unusual materials vibrate.

An immersion among instruments of all eras and types, cult objects, equipment, enriched by the projection of videos, to reconstruct the history and mutation of the techniques of luthiers -and not only- and their relationship with Livorno.

Fondazione Livorno, in addition to reaffirming its role as sponsor of Effetto Venezia, in this eighth edition of Artigianato a Effetto has asked the same artisans to demonstrate their skills to allow us to discover an ancient, often unknown, and extraordinary profession, made of notes, vibrations, and absolute knowledge of the material. The best local craftsmen in the sector will be present.

Participants

  • Ivano Colombini – Luthier
  • David D’Alesio – Clarinets and wind instruments
  • Antonio Ghezzani – Creative lutherie
  • Francesco Landucci – Experimental sound archaeology

and also:

  • Giovanni Balzaretti – Masks for opera
  • Desirée Costanzo – Costumes and scenography
  • Michele Lezza – 8mmezzo digitization and old films
  • Francesca Lombardi – Costumes and scenography

In addition to the craftsmen who build or care for musical instruments (Colombini, D’Alesio, Ghezzani, Landucci), there will be Giovanni Balzaretti who will exhibit his leather masks specially created for the opera stages, Desirée Costanzo and Francesca Lombardi, costume designers, tailors, scenographers, who have curated the setup, and Michele Lezza from 8mmezzo, who with his restoration and digitization work, performed to give new life to old Super8 films, will let us discover the use of music in old and new filming instruments.
Fondazione Livorno has brought this event to its eighth edition and included it in the Effetto Venezia program, to enhance the artisans of the territory.

The goal of promoting artistic craftsmanship and protecting the historical heritage of artisanal trades is shared with OMA, an association chaired by lawyer Luciano Barsotti and an instrumental body of Fondazione CR Firenze which supports it together with other banking foundations, including Fondazione Livorno.

The association, founded in 2010, collaborates with Italian and international institutions, conducts planning and research activities, and publishes the biannual magazine HANDS to tell stories of the trades, techniques, and artisan activities that play a primary role in Made in Italy.
